DAY 04- Groot (Marvel Legends, Guardians of the Galaxy)

January 4th, 2015. Day 4 of... I think we might have a problem here.

If there was any sort of bummer about Hasbro's Guardians of the Galaxy toyline, it's that 1) it never had a proper action figure line like the other Marvel movies, and 2) The only decent toy of Groot out there was stuck to Build-A-Figure pieces for an assortment that didn't really get good distribution until the DVD/Bluray release of Guardians of the Galaxy.

He is Groot, and he is WAY too big for my lightbox setup.
But hey, sometimes the best things are hard to get, and Marvel Legends Groot is the clear highlight of the Marvel Legends line for me right now. The organic, sinewy sculpting of Groot's body is flawless and incredibly accurate to his design in the film, outdone only by the upcoming Hot Toys release, with his questionably executed paint applications hampering what is otherwise a perfect appearance.

Seriously, he's too big for the lightbox. The Combiner Wars are going to be horrific.

His range of movement, however, is a basic highlight of several issues with the current Marvel Legends line. Groot's hip joints (and to a lesser degree, his shoulder joints) require tons of rotation and swiveling to get into various desired positions, and his knee and ankle joints while functional are severely limited by the sculpt, and his elbows have that Hasbro Marvel Legends problem of being composed of rubbery plastic that can warp pretty quickly.

But I don't care. Groot was the main reason I wanted the Marvel Legends of the GOTG crew, even before seeing the movie, and ultimately he alone is worth the price of admission on the entire wave. His sheer heft and size is impressive, even to the point where he nearly broke my lightbox while taking photos. Groot is great, but I really wish there were more options for people who can't 1) find/afford buying every single GOTG Marvel Legends release JUST to get him and/or 2) have the sheer space for him.

It'll grow back.
Day 4 complete. 361 to go.
